The Electrician
I needed my whole house rewired. The electrician quoted, I paid R52,000 as a 50% deposit — like you're told to. He showed up with a different labourer every day. None of them knew the plan. After doing maybe 10% of the work, he demanded the full amount upfront.
When I refused, he swore at me, sent me threatening WhatsApp messages, and refused to set foot on site unless I paid everything upfront. He was also supposed to issue the Certificate of Compliance — which can't be done until the job is actually finished. So not only was the work incomplete, I was left with no COC, no recourse, and an unfinished electrical system.
Then I hired a second electrician. Same thing happened again.
Two electricians. R100,000 in deposits. Zero completed work. Zero certificates.
The Plumber
By the time I needed a plumber, I was desperate — and they knew it. The quote came in at more than double what others charge. But I was mid-build, couldn't afford more delays, so I paid it.
That's the trap: when you're already in trouble, you overpay just to keep moving.
The Builder
I hired a building contractor to demolish and rebuild part of my house — three bedrooms, three bathrooms. He quoted, we accepted.
From day one, every phase was a fight. He invoiced extra for every little thing. His original quote conveniently left out work he knew would be needed.
