The first electrician came highly recommended. We agreed on R52,000 to rewire the entire house. He took the deposit, started work, then demanded full payment after completing maybe 10% of the job. When I refused, the messages turned threatening. He never came back. No Certificate of Compliance. No refund.

I hired a second electrician. Same story — different face. By the time I realised the pattern, I'd lost over R300,000 and had a house with exposed wiring and two contractors who'd vanished.

Then came the builder. Hired for a three-bedroom renovation. The extras never stopped — every week a new invoice for work that "wasn't in the quote." When we finally inspected the walls, my 11-year-old daughter pulled a brick out with her hands. We demolished everything and started over with someone new.

The plumber quoted double the standard rate. Trapped by the project timeline, I paid it. What choice did I have?
